The Background
SPS Investigations was recently instructed by a female client who had been married to her husband for approximately 26 years, with whom she shared children.
Making the initial call to us was extremely difficult for our client. For an extended period, she had suspected that her husband was leading a double life and believed that another woman was involved.
Her concerns centred around a former employee of her husband. She suspected that an apartment had been secretly rented for this woman and that her husband was regularly staying there, despite telling his wife that he was working away and staying in business hotels.
After years of uncertainty, conflicting explanations and considerable emotional distress, our client reached the point where she needed to establish the facts independently.
Identifying the Property
The first challenge was establishing exactly where the suspected second property was located.
Those involved appeared to have gone to considerable lengths to conceal any obvious digital footprint or association with the address.
Using our specialist investigative tracing resources and lawful research techniques, SPS Investigations successfully identified the apartment number and established its connection to the female concerned.
This gave our surveillance team the intelligence required to move to the next stage of the investigation.
A Surveillance-Aware Subject
This was not a straightforward surveillance deployment.
Our client had also made us aware of allegations that her husband had been involved in illegal activities despite publicly presenting himself as a legitimate businessman. These allegations were not independently investigated or verified by SPS Investigations as part of this instruction, but they were operationally relevant because the subject was described as being extremely surveillance-conscious.
This became apparent during the deployment.
While being discreetly monitored, the subject displayed behaviour consistent with anti-surveillance manoeuvres, apparently attempting to establish whether he was being followed.
For an inexperienced surveillance team, this could easily have compromised the investigation.
However, due to the experience of the SPS investigative team, appropriate distance, positioning and surveillance techniques were maintained throughout. Despite the subject’s apparent attempts to detect surveillance, our presence remained completely undetected.
Obtaining the Evidence
On an evening when the husband finished work, our investigators discreetly monitored his movements.
Despite his surveillance awareness and the counter-surveillance behaviour observed during the journey, our team successfully maintained covert observations through to the previously identified address.
The investigation culminated in our operatives obtaining clear photographic and video evidence of the husband attending the property and letting himself into the former employee’s apartment.
The evidence demonstrated that his movements were inconsistent with the account he had been providing to his wife regarding where he was staying.
Crucially, the entire operation was completed without compromising the investigation or alerting the subject to our presence.
The Outcome
For our client, the evidence finally brought an end to years of suspicion, anguish and uncertainty.
Rather than continuing to rely upon explanations she no longer believed, she now had independent, professionally obtained evidence upon which she could make informed decisions about her future.
Following the investigation, our client was able to instruct solicitors and commence divorce proceedings after approximately 26 years of marriage.
For SPS Investigations, this was a particularly successful operation because it combined specialist tracing, intelligence gathering and experienced covert surveillance against a highly surveillance-aware subject to obtain the evidence our client required.
Cases such as this demonstrate why experience matters. A subject who actively checks whether they are being followed can quickly compromise an inexperienced investigator.
